Tutorial

♥ Difficulty: Easy

1. Crop your image, brighten it, etc. I will be using this gorgeous shot of Shinobu.
When choosing an image, try and get a bright one. This colouring will not work with dark images.

2. Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Levels.
Channel: RGB - Input Levels: 21, 1.45, 255
Channel: Red - Input Levels: 25, 1.00, 255
Channel: Green - Input Levels: 5, 1.04, 255

Adjust the layer's opacity to suit your image. Mine is set to 40%.

Your icon should look something like this:

3. Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Colour
Reds: -100, +24, 0, -28
Yellows: -59, 0, +100, -15
Cyans: +100, 0, -100, 0

Your icon should look something like this:

4. Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Colour
Reds: -61, +28, +100, -34
Yellows: -28, +33, +65, -31
Cyans: +100, 0, -100, 0

Your icon should look something like this:

5. Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Levels
Channel: RGB - Input Levels: 17, 1.08, 255
Channel: Blue - Input Levels: 8, 1.09, 255

Your icon should look something like this:

6. Layer >> New Fill Layer >> Solid Colour
Mode: Colour Burn
Colour: #d6f6fd

Your icon should look something like this:

7. Layer >> New Fill Layer >> Solid Colour
Mode: Soft Light
Colour: #ffa7d9

Play with the opacity to suit your image. Mine is set to 45%

Your icon should look something like this:

8. Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Colour Balance
Tone Balance: Midtones (make sure Preserve Luminosity is checked)
Colour Levels: +23, 0, -28

Play with the opacity to suit your image. Mine is set to 57%

Your icon should look something like this:

9. One more step! Copy your merged image (Select >> Select all. Edit >> Copy Merged). Paste this on top of your other layers.
Then go to Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen.
Play with the opacity of this layer to suit your own image. Make sure it's not too sharp.

And we're done!

Other Variations


Note: This colouring technique will not work with every image. In fact, with real images, it's quite hard to get a nice result. I find that with anime images, they work much better. However, best play with the levels and opacities on your own to see how it can turn out. (:

Wow, I'm on a junjou spree. After figuring out that colouring works really well with the colours that are already present in the show, I decided to whip a batch together. I accidentally paused at the scene from #43 and my heart literally skipped. He's so pretty. T^T
